Tech support pop-ups

A loud warning says your device is infected and tells you to call a number.

Sample content for development. This profile will be reviewed by DTI before launch.

How it works

A browser pop-up or full-screen page claims your computer is infected or locked. The number connects to scammers who ask for remote access, then charge for fake repairs or access your bank account.

What it can look like

Example browser pop-up
secure-device-alert.support

SECURITY ALERT: Your device is infected

Your personal data and banking information are at risk. Do not close this window. Call Support immediately to remove 5 detected threats.

Warning signs

  • A pop-up telling you to call a phone number
  • Alarm sounds, flashing warnings or a countdown
  • Anyone asking to remotely control your device

Common tactics

  • Copying the look of real security software
  • Showing normal system files as 'proof' of infection
  • Asking you to log into your bank 'to process a refund'

What to do

  1. Close the browser. If it won't close, restart the device
  2. Never call a number from a pop-up
  3. If you gave remote access, disconnect from the internet and run a trusted security scan
  4. Change passwords from a different, clean device

Reporting

Report the message or account to the platform it came through, then report to your country's official fraud reporting service. If money or banking details are involved, contact your bank or payment provider first.
