Job and task scams

An easy, well-paid job that asks you to pay first or handle money for them.

Sample content for development. This profile will be reviewed by DTI before launch.

How it works

Offers arrive by text or messaging app for remote work: rating products, 'optimising' apps or processing payments. You may be paid small amounts at first, then asked to deposit your own money to unlock bigger tasks.

Warning signs

  • A job offer you didn't apply for
  • Paying for training, equipment or 'task unlocks'
  • Being asked to receive and forward money or goods
  • Interviews only by text chat

Common tactics

  • Small early payouts to build trust
  • Group chats where 'other workers' celebrate earnings
  • Fake cheques to deposit, with part sent back

What to do

  1. Never pay to get a job
  2. Never move money for an employer through your personal account
  3. Look up the company independently and contact it directly

Reporting

Report the message or account to the platform it came through, then report to your country's official fraud reporting service. If money or banking details are involved, contact your bank or payment provider first.
